چکیده

We present a model of the optimal timing of a large-scale habitat restoration project. The model is a dynamic benefit optimization that includes ecosystem costs caused by the presence of a large dam. We use a single stochastic variable to incorporate two sources of uncertainty: uncertainty about how ecosystem costs will evolve over time and the possibility of the ecosystem jumping to an undesirable state. We use our model to illustrate two main results. First, variability in ecosystem costs creates an incentive to delay a project intended to restore ecosystem health. The uncertainty regarding ecosystem costs creates an option value to waiting to invest in restoration at a later date. Second, the possibility of jumping to an irreversible and unacceptably bad ecosystem state (such as species extinction) creates an incentive to hasten restoration. These results formalize the countervailing incentives faced by policymakers whenmultiple uncertainties and irreversibilities are present in managed ecosystems.

Incorporating Risk Preferences into Real Options Models

This paper develops a framework to link the expected utility analysis to real options models in order to capture the joint effects of risk aversion and irreversibility associated with real investments. It aims at modifying the theory of investment under uncertainty by incorporating decision makers’ risk preferences and allows explicitly analyzing the impacts of risk aversion, uncertainty and ir...

Habitat suitability modeling for wild goat (Capra aegagrus) in a mountainous arid area, central Iran

Wild goat (Capra aegagrus) is one of the most prominent mountain mammals dispersed in many habitats in Iran. However, few studies on the relationship between this species and its habitat have been conducted. This species is recognized as one of the main food source for highly endangered species such as cheetah and leopard. In this study which lasted from fall 2009 through summer 2011, seasona...

Irreversibility and Restoration in Natural Resource Development

We extend Real Option Theory to evaluate natural resource development projects that may bring negative net bene ts and require costly restoration. Based on a new concept, irreversibility cost, we show that the degree of irreversibility becomes an endogenous choice, rather than an exogenously given economic constraint. The xed cost of restoration has continuous impacts, over and above the widely...

Investigation of woody species diversity in relation to physiographic factors (Case study; Yew habitat of Kalaleh-Arasbaran)

Physiographic factors, due to their special role in determining some climatic and edaphic parameters, always influence the diversity and richness of plant species. Due to the importance of Arasbaran vegetation area, the present study was conducted to investigate the biodiversity of woody species of Kalaleh yew habitat in relation to physiographic factors. For this purpose, 62 plots of 4 square ...

An Exact solution for the investment and value of a firm facing uncertainty, adjustment costs, information costs and irreversibility

Following the analysis in Abel and Eberly (1997), I derive closed-form solutions for the investment and value of a competitive firm with a constantreturns-to-scale production function and convex costs of adjustment. The analysis concerns reversible and irreversible investments under incomplete information. Optimal investment seems to be a non-decreasing function of q, the shadow value of capita...
